ON-SITE

ON-SITE took place within the 2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture as the exhibition occupied the redeveloped urban-village setting of Nantou Ancient Town. Shangqi produced the writing, editing, and curatorial material, while Bai translated this content into the visual system of six successive newspaper issues and directed their spatial presentation.

The choice of a newspaper rather than a single fixed publication was connected to the site and to the way the content could circulate. The lightweight format was closer to everyday reading and street distribution, while six issues allowed material to unfold through the preparation and duration of the exhibition.

At the exhibition, the publishing format became spatial. The six issues covered walls, windows, and the ceiling, while printing equipment, paper, and ink formed a workspace resembling an underground zine print room. Visitors could read individual sheets while also encountering the production and accumulation of print as part of the environment.

The collaboration had a clear division of roles. Rather than turning design itself into an independent artistic proposition, the project shows how curatorial content can acquire an appropriate visual form, mode of circulation, and spatial condition within a specific urban-village context.
