Zhiwei Bai (b. 1981, Guangdong, China) lives and works in Shenzhen. His practice spans photography, painting, moving image, sound, installation, and publishing, drawing on bodily perception, personal memory, and lived experience of the city. Through collecting, translating between media, and arranging material, he brings images, sounds, and personal records into new material and spatial contexts. His work attends to the shifts, losses, and traces that emerge through these processes, and to the relationships that take shape when existing material is revisited, reworked, and presented anew.
In recent years, some of Bai’s works have developed into systems that continue to operate throughout their presentation. He examines how deviations arise within them, and how human judgement, material properties, and environmental changes shape their behaviour. Correction, adjustment, and maintenance respond to changes already underway while also altering the conditions for what happens next. Through these works, he explores how stability is established, sustained, and renegotiated within perceptual and technological systems, opening onto broader questions about how reality is organized and perceived.
Bai has an extensive background in visual communication and cross-media practice. His early involvement in Shenzhen’s underground music scene shaped his sensitivity to sound and his approach to listening. The city’s urban transformation, industrial materials, and electronics manufacturing environment continue to inform his choice of materials and use of technology. These experiences also ground his understanding of how things are connected, replaced, and remade.
柏志威，1981年生于广东，现生活与工作于深圳。他的实践涉及摄影、绘画、影像、声音、装置与出版，从身体感知、个人记忆和具体城市经验出发。通过采集、媒介转译与关系编排，他在不同材料与空间中重新组织图像、声音和个人记录，关注这些转换中产生的漂移、损耗与残留，以及既有材料在重新调用、制作和呈现中形成的新关系。
近年，他在部分作品中进一步将这些关系组织为可运行的系统，关注偏差如何发生，以及人的判断、材料特性与环境变化如何共同影响运行。修正、调整与维护既回应已有变化，也可能改变后续运行的条件。他由此进一步探索感知与技术系统中的稳定如何形成、被维持和重新调整，并将这一研究延伸到现实如何被组织与感知的问题。
柏志威拥有长期视觉传达与跨媒介工作经验。早期参与深圳地下音乐现场的经历，塑造了他对声音的敏感度与聆听习惯。深圳的城市变化、工业材料与电子制造环境，持续影响着他的材料选择与技术使用，也构成了他理解连接、替换和重新制作的具体经验来源。

Zhiwei Bai has participated in exhibitions and projects including the 100+ Art Season at Shenzhen Buji Cultural and Sports Center, where he received the Most Popular Artist Award and Jury Award, and the Songshan Lake Biennale in Dongguan (2025). Other presentations include GLOW Shenzhen 2022: Forest of Light, where he received the Inspiration Award, and the ERÀ Monologue Art Exhibition at INNerà Art Space, Shanghai (2022); Trash New Order, part of the OCT-LOFT Public Art Exhibition at B10 Space, and Tomorrow’s Vision: Dimensions in Motion, part of the Coastal Corridor Art Project in Shenzhen (2020); and View of City: Contemporary Photography Art Exhibition at Shenzhen Art Museum (2018). He also participated in Cities, Grow in Difference at the UABB Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, World by World Art Exhibition at NordArt, Germany, and Lens: Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition at Shenzhen Art Museum (2017); Unknown Asia Art Exchange in Osaka (2016); and Re-living the City at UABB, the 1st Shenzhen Contemporary Art Biennale, and Magic Contemporary Art Exhibition in Shenzhen (2015).
Design Recognition
Bai’s design work has received recognition from Tokyo TDC (2021), the HKDA Global Design Awards (Bronze Award, 2021), the Red Dot Design Award and iF Design Award (2018), and the DFA Design for Asia Awards (Silver Award, 2017). In 2015, he was named one of Forbes China’s “30 Most Promising Designers.” Between 2007 and 2012, his work was selected by TDC New York, Tokyo TDC, ADC New York, Golden Bee, and international poster biennales in Chaumont, Warsaw, Toyama, Brno, and Lahti.
