Interval

Within the curatorial framework of Soundscapes of the City, curated by Luo Jing of the Pingshan Art Museum, this collaboration seeks to further explore the complex relationships between sound, moving image, and the urban environment. The work extends an archive of arcade sound and image materials that I accumulated through field research and practice between 2005 and 2008. Through algorithmic auto-editing and nonlinear recomposition, the existing materials are reactivated as a form of “archival regeneration.”

In the process, new structures and rhythms emerge through continual displacement and rupture. Sound—seemingly intangible yet persistently present—is treated as a medium capable of activating and reorganizing memory.

The work responds to the exhibition’s inquiry into the “sounding city.” The city is not only an object to be seen, but also a field to be heard. Sound guides us back into the everyday layers of urban life while prompting renewed reflection on time, memory, and the authenticity of history. Within this perceptual shift, the city can be understood as a continually evolving acoustic community, and our act of listening becomes a way of intervening in its ongoing extension and regeneration.
